Shining Star Prom is all about giving teens with disabilities a chance to have an unforgettable prom night. Last year's inaugural event was such a smashing success that Shining Star is bringing it back this year, this time with the theme of "April in Paris."
This year's event is April 14 at the picturesque Gilroy Elks Lodge on Hecker Pass Highway, overlooking the rolling hills and the sparkling city lights of Paris... (or Gilroy, if we are going to be technical).
April in Paris is a sensory-friendly event specifically designed for special needs high school students in Morgan Hill, Gilroy, and Hollister. This year's prom will be bigger and better, thanks to a generous grant from the Gilroy Rotary Club.
"Students with disabilities are sometimes self-conscious and reluctant to attend events such as traditional proms and dances with the general school population. Consequently, they miss out on these important milestones. The Shining Star Prom is designed so that everyone has an exciting, FUN and memorable evening where no one will be uncomfortable," the event's fundraising page reads.
At last year's event, the beautiful students got their hair and makeup done to look fancy and danced and laughed and ate with no inhibitions, especially getting down to Justin Timberlake. To get a closer look at the magic of last year's prom, check out this video.
Shining Star Prom is seeking donations from the community to make sure the night is as magical as the children deserve. Any donation is appreciated. You can donate and learn more about the event at their You Caring fundraising page. They are also seeking volunteers for the event--from getting down on the dance floor with the students to helping with their hair and makeup, to decorating, there is no shortage of ways to get involved with this heartwarming event.
We'll see you there!
