In Which I Join the South County Young Professionals

Last night was my first time at the South County Young Professionals Network. SCYPN (the cool people pronounce that as “skippin” FYI) is a new-ish dynamic group of professionals who are young or young at heart. Last night’s event was their second annual Oktoberfest/Costume Contest at the Running Shop and Hops in Morgan Hill.

First of all, this was my first time at the Running Shop and Hops--and wow. I loved the industrial feel (it’s literally a converted warehouse) and the plethora of beers on tap. Since I’m trying to get in the autumnal mood, I went for a super dry cider from Sebastopol. My husband went for a red ale from Paso Robles. Both were fantastic. There are darts and shuffleboard and a PacMan machine. We’ll be back.

The event had THE BEST ceviche/seafood salsa I’ve ever had. I may have filled my plate five or six times. Not even sorry. What made this event doubly cool, beyond the beer and the ceviche, was the fact that it was a fundraiser for One Giving Tree. Have you heard of One Giving Tree before?

One Giving Tree is a local charity that… get this… provides Christmas trees to those who can’t afford them. HOW COOL IS THAT. I met the co-founder last night, Debbi Sanchez and she said their goal this year is to donate 150 Christmas trees to local needy families.

“Christmas trees are something we take for granted, but for a kid who doesn’t have one, it’s a big deal,” Debbi said.

The SCYPN event raised $520 for One Giving Tree.

I shared a drink and caught up with local business strategist Raul Ceja, who has become my go-to for social media questions in the past few weeks.

I’m excited to get more involved with SCYPN and build friendships with young people who work hard and care about their community. I officially joined last night (an entire year’s membership is only $20! That’s the most affordable professional membership you’ll ever find) and I’ll try to make all the events I can. SCYPN meets the last Thursday of every month and rotates the location between bars and restaurants in Gilroy, Morgan Hill and sometimes Hollister. Next month’s gathering will be at Bartender’s Union in Gilroy--which y’all already know I’m a tiny bit obsessed with. (I seriously wear my Bartender’s Union trucker hat everywhere. I get so many compliments!)
