The South Valley Voice

At the risk of sounding cliche, I cannot believe how fast this summer went. I am a summer girl through-and-through. I love shorts, watermelon, and the community that summer fosters--how the sun lingers in the sky and kids stay up way past their bedtime, and how people tend to have less obligation and more time for each other.

Kids These Days...A Day At Kids Discover Art

Kids Discover Art, Gilroy

I see a lot of stuff on the Internet about kids these days. I see lists of things Millennials are killing. I hear grumbling about how young people today don’t know the value of the dollar, or how their eyes are always glued to a screen, or how they’ll never move out of their parent’s houses.

I also sometimes see negative commentary about our local youth. How they drive too fast, swear in front of our kids at Starbucks, loiter in public parks, or play music too loud from their headphones in the library.

Bartender's Union

The other night, I left the kids with my husband and went out with a couple of my closest girlfriends. This is a rare luxury in the life of a parent of two small children. Gilroy Pumpkin People

Fall traditions are a special thing. When the the air reaches its signature autumn crispness, my family always try to make one trip to a pumpkin patch, take a walk in the changing leaves, and bake an apple pie. Also, last fall, if you happened to pass my house, you would have seen scenes from various Roald Dahl stories come to life with large, round, orange heads. If it sounds insane, I guarantee you that only a small amount of madness was involved.

Run for the Roses

On Saturday Gilroy Gardens hosted the annual Day in the County event for the Gilroy Foundation. For 38 years the Foundation has held A Day in the Country event. This year’s was one of the best!

Themed after the Kentucky Derby: Run for the Roses, guests filled the Garden pavilion. Gilroy Gardens might have a wide selection of hats for sale but this event brought out the finest bonnets the Gardens has ever seen.
